Synopsis

Emily's life sounded more like the punch line to a joke than an actual turn of events.

... a student nurse walks into an illegal, underground fighting club...

Emily Sheppard didn't have much to live for. As a foster child, her life was anything but glamorous and her daily commute through New York's underbelly reminded her of that. Nursing was her life, her only way to help others in need.

Then her pride took it from her.

Jai Stone wasn't important. The train he rode around New York never let him forget that. Jai had fights to fight and a brother to save, but one random night slipped an innocent into his grasp.

Now they're trapped together.
A fighter and a nurse.
... and it all comes down to one truth.

FIGHT OR DIE.

REVIEW

Wow. Just Wow!
We all love the Consumed series by Skyla so you may go into this thinking this will be something like that series since they are both fighter books, but let me tell you…it is completely different.  It is Raw and gritty and so fucked up crazy startling you won’t be able to set it down once you start.
Emily is a nursing student from one of the poorest neighborhoods possible.  She is a loner and keeps her head down to ensure she doesn’t get noticed.  She isn’t up for drama, she just wants to hide in the shadows of her boring and mundane life.
One night while riding the train home someone knocks into her and ends up busting her tablet…the one thing she has to keep her going in school and she knows she will not be able to afford to fix it.  So she follows the guy who knocked it out of her arms and demands payment.
What she got in return was something she never bargained for…and yet, when she looks deep inside herself, she finds herself completely enthralled by.

“I see the way you react to the fights. I feel your body tighten and relax. Your pupils’ dilate. Your breath becomes heavy. You hate being down here, but you love the darkness of it all- the dirtiness.”

This stranger- Jai- takes Emily into a world so far beneath underground no one even knows it exists beside the very limited number of people that paid thousands to be there.
No one is welcome in unless they are prepared to fight or die for their way out.  Including Emily,

Jai is there with an ulterior motive and having this girl tag along was not part of his plan.  Now not only is he worried about his own objectives, he now finds himself worrying about how he is going to help Emily survive in their new world.

I have to say, these characters-  AMAZING!  Jai!  Holy mother of fighters I freaking LOVE Jai!  He is equal parts of scary alpha fighter and sweet demanding protector.  He is quiet and doesn’t say much but everything he says and does- is with purpose.  He is there to fight for those he loves and he can’t let anything stand in his way.

And Emily is so strong. Despite being thrown into this dark and gritty world she is resilient and wills herself to do what she has to do to survive.  She never feels sorry for herself. She is witty and actually, despite her circumstances, she made me laugh.

The cot isn’t the ideal place to sleep, but it’s smoother than the mattress that folds out of the wall back home.  At least there are no springs stabbing me in my organs here."

I am really picky when it comes to novella series but this is definitely one that I can’t wait to continue.  I will be stalking Skyla non stop for the next round.

His fingers play along each side of my ribs, but it doesn’t make me any less nervous.  The strongest backhands always come from those who caress the softest.

“Do you regret what we did?” he asks.
“No,” I reply with absolute certainty.
“Good.” He grips my waist and pulls me higher so my lips are in line with his. “Because I want more.”
