Jade West is the queen of kink. After reading her first two books in the Dirty Bad series, I knew her stories were dirty, bad, wrong and savage but after reading Dirty Bad Strangers, I was blown away by just how much dirtier, badder, "wronger", and "savager" it could get. But even amongst the kinkiest scenarios playing out, there is a depth to her stories that transcends the kink and leads to a beautiful love story. Dirty Bad Strangers was no different.
Dirty Bad Savage tells the story of Gemma, a phone sex operator, and Jason, one of her callers. For weeks Jason calls and they begin getting to know each other. As they talk, both begin to fall a little for the other even though they really know nothing about the other person. Hiding behind the phone, they are able to live out their secret fantasies vicariously through each other. Gemma soon learns that she shares the same dark fantasies as Jason does. She wants to be taken anonymously by a stranger who then invites other strangers to take her at the same time in every way possible. Eventually Jason pushes the boundaries of their relationship and seeks out Gemma. She eventually agrees to play out their fantasies in real life. But what happens when the game is over? What happens when the blindfold comes off and reality replaces the fantasy?
There really are no words for how much I adore Jade and her writing. It's so real, and raw, and honest. While I read a lot of kinky stories, there are none that compare to Jade's. My little vanilla life got turned on its head once again as I delved into this story. Never before have I thought, "A little gang bang sounds nice." But as I'm pulled into Gemma and Jason's story I find myself like, "That doesn't sound so bad after all." That's a testament to brilliant writing and phenomenal story telling.
This wasn't just erotica and extreme BDSM for the sake of shocking the reader. Jade ties it so wholly to the story arc and the characters development that each act feels like a true progression and the obvious answer. It honestly blows me away. In addition there were so many more layers to the story than I ever anticipated. The depth of the story telling truly moved me. I went in expecting a straight forward kinky game between two people who shared a common interest but I got so much more than that. Gemma and Jason's relationship evolved and I both swooned and giggled as I watched them try to navigate there new found relationship. I was rooting for them even as I didn't really see how it would all work out in the end. The game became so much more than what it started as and Jason and Gemma found themselves much more entrenched in each other than they ever expected and it was absolutely beautiful.
The only part that I wished was included was more at the end. As soon as Cara (from the previous books) was mentioned, I eagerly anticipated a scene at the club. I wanted to see Gemma and Jason living out their fantasy in real life and watch as they worked out how to make that a reality. I was a bit bummed not to see that play out. I also wished for a little more resolution in regards to the Jason's life. It felt like it wrapped up much more quickly in comparison to how long the conflict lasted. In the end though I was absolutely happy and content with where Gemma and Jason are at the end. After the last word, I just wanted to start the series all over again and relive the dirtiest yet most truly touching series I've read in a long time.
Basically you need to read this book. It was vulgar, intense and graphic. It was also a breathtaking romance filled with themes of acceptance and devotion that went way beyond Dirty Bad Strangers. (But for serious, take the warning to heart. It's there for a reason.)
