From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Douglas, comes the latest New Adult romance of love, hate, and everything in between...

"We were perfect together. Until we met."

Misha

I can’t help but smile at the lyrics in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…

And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F*ck it. I need to meet her.

I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his phone number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

*Punk 57 is a stand alone New Adult romance. It is suitable for ages 18+.

My Review

Punk 57 put me through the wringer. It was surprising and gritty, and sexy and most of all important. Penelope Douglas can write characters and story lines that I would have a hard time wanting to read if it wasn't for her brilliant ability to make me like characters that are still in high school. I haven't read a book in this genre in a long while, but as soon as this blurb was revealed, I knew I needed to read it and I'm so glad I did. And even though these characters were in high school, it certainly didn't read like YA because it was HAWT. Like smoking HOT. And yet Ms.Douglas was able to tell a story that everyone needs to hear even if it's hard at times because the powerful message is timeless.

Punk 57 starts with two kids, Misha and Ryan, becoming pen pals when they were young. Now years later, they've kept their writing relationship up and are more open and honest with each other than with just about anyone else in their lives. As seniors in high school, they've never met or seen the other even though they only live 30 minutes away. They decided long ago to keep their relationship strictly pen and paper so as not to sway their opinion on each other. Yet one night changes everything.

Now three months have gone by and Ryen hasn't heard from Misha. And that's odd. Just out of the blue he stopped writing leaving Ryen hanging. What Ryen doesn't know is that Misha found her and hates everything he finds. What Misha and Ryen have built over the years starts crumbling and when reality is different from paper, neither is left unscathed.

This was a story that kept me riveted even though there were times when I despised both the hero and the heroine. Like I literally clenched my jaw as I was reading because they both did some things that made me so angry. But then the reasons for those things would be revealed and I would understand a little. Not that it made the things they did okay, but Ms. Douglas laid a foundation that even if I didn't like it, I could see why things happened the way they did. Then when the last part of the story unfolded, I felt tremendous empathy for these characters: their struggles, their choices, and their reasons. Plus with the surprising twists and turns, Punk 57 kept me on the edge of my seat.

Ms. Douglas penned a story that could really be any of us and is a lot of us. It's a story about acceptance, being who you are, and moving on when things seem their worst. And while I may not have liked much of what I saw these characters go through and wished for a bit more toward the end, I'm so glad that I read this powerful (and sexy as sin) story.
